musk discussed several upcoming updates in recent interviews with joe rogan and the all-in podcast, giving insight into where x is heading next.
a curated following feed
one of the first updates musk mentioned is a curated following tab, designed to highlight top posts from accounts users already follow.
“we’re going to add a curated following tab,” musk explained. “if you follow some people who post a lot, your following feed can get cluttered. grok will soon be able to show you the most interesting posts from your friends right in the following tab.”
essentially, it’s a more refined version of the feed — similar to facebook’s algorithmic news feed — intended to surface quality content users might otherwise miss. musk emphasized that the traditional “following” and “for you” feeds will remain available, giving users more options for how they browse.
while this could help users discover valuable content, it also risks overcomplicating the experience with too many feed variations.
ai-powered sorting and engagement
musk also revealed that grok, x’s in-house ai system, will soon process every post in the app to enhance sorting and recommendation accuracy.
“there are about 100 million english posts per day on x,” musk said. “grok will start reading them all, understanding and categorizing them to match users — something humans could never do.”
in theory, this will improve post relevance and engagement through ai-driven personalization.
semantic search
another major addition will be semantic search, allowing users to type or ask natural-language questions and instantly find all related text or visual posts on the platform.
encrypted messaging and “x chat”
during his conversation with rogan, musk also discussed improvements to encrypted messaging on x (now branded xchat). he compared its encryption process to bitcoin’s system, calling it an effort to create “the least insecure messaging platform available.”
although the current encryption system has faced criticism for security flaws, musk says improvements are ongoing. he also revealed plans for a separate x chat app, enabling users to manage private messages outside the main x interface — a move inspired by wechat’s model.
this could eventually support musk’s broader goal of integrating payments through a service called xmoney, making x a hub for both communication and transactions.
the “everything app” vision — still in progress
musk’s grand vision for x has evolved since his original investor pitch deck in 2022. that document projected:
-
931 million users by 2028
-
half of x’s revenue coming from subscriptions
-
600 million monthly users by 2025
while x may have reached that 2025 user milestone (according to its internal reports), adoption of x premium remains far below expectations, and there’s little sign of major growth in western markets.
musk’s challenge lies in convincing users to embrace the platform’s expanded functionality — especially payments — in a region where people prefer using multiple specialized apps instead of one all-in-one solution like wechat.
given these hurdles, musk now appears to be shifting focus toward xai, his separate ai company. data from x could serve as fuel for xai’s future tools and revenue streams.
for now, x remains a work in progress — an ambitious experiment blending social networking, ai, and commerce. while some features show promise, there’s still no clear sign that x is on the verge of a major comeback.
