The head of the Trust and Safety Department at Twitter confirmed that the company will cancel the ban it imposed in 2019 on political ads, according to Reuters.
The company tweeted on Tuesday that it would relax its advertising policy on "cause-based advertising" in the United States and align its advertising policy with television and other media.
At a time when the company owned by Elon Musk seeks to increase revenues, this change will bring Twitter's policy closer to the Meta Facebook and YouTube platforms that allow political ads, unlike the Chinese video platform TikTok, which still prohibits this type of ads.
In turn, Twitter's head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin, said in an email, that cause-based ads that will be allowed on Twitter include ads that educate or raise awareness of issues such as voter registration, climate change, or government programs such as the census.
Twitter banned political ads in 2019 after it faced widespread criticism for allowing election disinformation.
