Meta has announced that it is launching a digital designer clothing store that will allow users to purchase items of clothing for their avatars in its metaverse. The company believes that clothing and other accessories will become an important part of users' expression and that this will entice them to spend money on digital wearables across all Meta apps, including Facebook and Instagram.
And through a post on the Facebook platform, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that more brands will be added soon to the new avatar store.
Zuckerberg says that digital goods will be an important way for users to express themselves in the metaverse and a major driver of the creative economy.
Luxury fashion houses are increasingly collaborating with tech companies to create digital clothing for their brands. Last year, Fortnite introduced Balenciaga skins so players could purchase clothing like a branded jacket for their in-game characters.
The company that developed the game, Roblox, followed the approach of Fortnite and allowed its players to visit the entire city of Gucci with a garden bearing the brand's logo that includes a virtual store.
The Meta store will begin appearing next week, and the American tech giant has not revealed any information about the prices of digital clothing in its store, but it has indicated that free clothing options for Meta avatars will still be available.
