The new feature allows users to create a shared conversation space where friends, family members, or colleagues can join. Importantly, OpenAI confirms that the personal ChatGPT memory linked to the chat creator is not shared within the group.
This update expands the platform’s capabilities, as OpenAI notes that group chats can help users plan short trips, exchange design ideas, or decide on a restaurant that suits everyone. They can also support school projects and daily work tasks by enabling participants to share links, notes, and questions in one place.
Group chats appear in a dedicated section in the sidebar, completely separate from private conversations. A new group can be created with a single click on the people icon at the top of the chat window. Users can invite others via a shareable link, allowing up to 20 participants. Anyone in the group can reshare the link if the chat creator enables that option.
Regarding privacy and safety, OpenAI highlights that the feature is designed with user data protection in mind. However, it’s recommended not to share sensitive information through public links—especially in work environments. Clear rules should also be set for participants on how links are shared and used to maintain better group organization.
This feature brings practical value to both work and educational settings, enabling small groups to manage task lists, share summaries and references, and run quick brainstorming sessions. Families can also use it to organize activities more smoothly. With this update, ChatGPT takes a step toward becoming a more social platform, expanding beyond one-on-one chats and personal assistance.
