This launch comes in response to repeated complaints from creators, who over the years have reported that their videos are often reposted without permission.
According to the company, the new tool allows creators to identify any original short videos (“Reels”) that are partially or fully copied on Facebook or Instagram. Registered creators can see which accounts have reposted their work and take appropriate actions regarding the video.
These actions include a “tracking” option, which adds a tag indicating that the video is sourced from the original creator’s account, along with a direct link to it. Creators can also monitor view counts. Additionally, they can block the video completely to prevent others from watching it, without imposing additional penalties on the account that reposted it. The tool also offers a “release” option, which removes the video from the dashboard, making it impossible for the creator to track its performance.
The dashboard also provides additional data to help creators make decisions, such as whether the reposting account is monetizing the video. This may influence whether the creator chooses to track it with attribution or block it entirely. Conversely, if the account that reposted the video has a small number of followers, the creator may choose to simply monitor it.
Meta notes that some of these functions were previously available to Facebook creators through Rights Manager, but integrating them directly into the Facebook app broadens access. However, the company confirms that the Content Protection tool is currently available only for original videos posted on Facebook, even though it can detect copies posted on Instagram.
The company explains that the tool is initially reaching creators who are part of the monetization program and meet the standards of integrity and originality, as well as existing users of Rights Manager. Creators can also apply directly for access.
