The company is now accepting applications from developers who want to join the program. “We are expanding a closed beta to both new and power users who want to ship amazing apps on X,” the company’s developer account wrote.
X’s new API page outlines costs for different types of requests, including reading, posting, sending DMs, checking trends, and retrieving bookmarks. It also includes a calculator to estimate costs based on usage, a departure from X’s previous flat-rate system.
The page compares the new pay-per-use pricing with the old tier-based model, though it’s unclear if X plans to phase out the older system entirely.
The closed beta comes after X blocked third-party clients and ended free API access in early 2023, leading to several app shutdowns. X then introduced paid plans: a basic tier (initially $100/month, now $200), a $5,000/month Pro plan, and a $42,000/month enterprise tier, but these were often too expensive or insufficient for many developers. Top-up packs were later introduced to help apps exceeding their tier limits.
With this new usage-based model, X could attract developers who want to integrate with the platform or build applications that rely on its API.
