TikTok Enhances Direct Messages with New Features – Here Are the Details

TikTok has rolled out a new set of features for its Direct Messages (DMs), allowing users to send voice messages up to 60 seconds long and share up to 9 photos or videos in both one-on-one and group chats.

With these additions, the platform aims to expand its use beyond entertainment and position itself as a space for daily communication between users, putting it in direct competition with popular apps like WhatsApp and Instagram.

TikTok also confirmed that users can capture photos or videos directly through the in-app camera, or choose content from their phone’s gallery, with the option to edit before sending. However, users cannot send a photo or video as the first message when starting a new conversation, for safety reasons. The platform also provides privacy alerts before sharing any personal content.

The company clarified that direct messages remain unavailable for users under 16, while additional protection mechanisms have been introduced for those aged 16 to 18. These include automated systems that detect and block inappropriate images so they never reach the recipient.

As for adult users over 18, they will be able to activate this feature through the app’s settings.
