A Nebraska man paddled 38 miles down the Missouri River in an 846-pound pumpkin

A Nebraska man rowed 38 miles (about 60 kilometers) in the Missouri River on Saturday in a "boat" made of a hollowed out pumpkin. His goal was to celebrate his 60th birthday, and his desire to set a world record in the Guinness Book of Records.

At about 7:30 a.m., Dwayne Hansen set off from Bellevue, Nebraska Public Boat Harbor on an 846-pound (roughly 384-kilogram) pumpkin, arriving in Nebraska City just after 6:30 p.m., according to a post on Bellevue City Facebook page.

Hansen asked Bellevue city officials to be witnesses to his attempt to set the record.

According to the post, a witness in the city explained: “It is said that if you stay at your job long enough, you can see almost everything, and this morning was one of those days.”

The pumpkin had the name "SS Berta" written on it, and it had a cup holder engraved into its frame.

The post stated that Hansen's wife, family, and friends were also present to document the trip, while others followed him on real boats in case the fruit had any trouble.

The previous record for the longest trip on a boat made of a pumpkin fruit was 25.5 miles (41,038 km), and this record was set in 2018, according to the Guinness World Records website.

A Guinness World Records spokeswoman, Kylie Galloway, told CNN that the organization had received Hansen's application for the title and was awaiting evidence for its review.

“As part of our application process, we provide the applicant with guidelines for the intended index category, which must be adhered to to qualify,” Galloway explained by email. “These guidelines also detail the evidence that must be provided. Once received, and reviewed, our records management team will post This is to confirm the success or failure of the attempt to break the record."

Hansen lives in Syracuse, Nebraska, and the Facebook post said he enjoys growing large pumpkins, squash, and other vegetables as a hobby.
