Hot Frontend Development Trends to Follow in 2021
There are plenty of "design trends to follow" articles floating around the web. Focusing on topics like these is very understandable - the design itself is what both the customer and the visitor see. However, the code behind it is irrelevant to most users.

But while it appears irrelevant, of course, it is extremely important. Clean code, improved methods, and new technologies are what allow developers to present beautiful designs in a way that can be scaled up. Performance is what users want, and scalability is what the customer wants.

In this blog post, we would like to share our insights and vision of the frontend development trends for 2021.

1- CSS custom properties:

This is something that developers have wanted for years even though custom CSS properties (or also known as CSS Variables) have been around for a while now. For example, the W3C Module Level 1 is from 2015. But as with any new technology, it takes time to gain traction.

And we believe that in 2021, we will see some of the largest adoption rates since its inception.
They are entities defined by CSS authors that contain specific values to be reused throughout a document. They are set using custom property notation (e.g., --main-color: black;) and are accessed using the var() function (e.g., color: var(--main-color);).

 2- Variable fonts:

Variable fonts, just like custom CSS properties have been around for a while, but they're still not widely used. One of the reasons is the time they need to become more popular, the number of tutorials / guides and technologies to be adopted by developers as well as the fonts they need. You can't just choose any font and apply changes to it.
Variable Fonts are one of the go-to sites that you can use to browse and experiment. They are an evolution of the OpenType font specification that enables many different variations of a typeface to be incorporated into a single file, rather than having a separate font file for every width, weight, or style.

3- More JavaScript!

The power of JavaScript is getting stronger year by year. It was named the most studied and popular language in 2020 and got a sufficient number of updates and new features. As for business, it means that more contractors are going to offer JS as a part of their technology stacks as the language can be used for the implementation of various requirements. So, CSS and HTML, make some room, please.

4- New CSS features

Using new CSS features can be a trend itself. Although it is not a change of a specific feature or approach, it does challenge the way we have used programming so far the pros? It solves a lot of problems. Bad? Compatibility.
But thanks to the progress of browser vendors in the past year or two (looking at you, Microsoft), the majority of users around the world can access the web more efficiently than ever before.

5- JAMstack

JAM stands for JavaScript, API & Markup. It is a modern web development architecture based on client-side JavaScript, reusable APIs, and prebuilt Markup. The JAMstack doesn’t change the technologies you use— JAMstack sites can be built in Javascript, PHP, Ruby, Python or virtually any language. It’s not a collection of specific software, it’s a set of best practices that combines:

  • GIT Workflows
  • Modern Build Tools
  • CDN Technology

6- Progressive Web Apps

PWAs are web apps that use emerging web browser APIs and features along with traditional progressive enhancement strategy to bring a native app-like user experience to cross-platform web applications. Progressive Web Apps are a useful design pattern, though they aren't a formalized standard. PWA can be thought of as similar to AJAX or other similar patterns that encompass a set of application attributes, including use of specific web technologies and techniques. This set of docs tells you all you need to know about them.

7- GraphQL

GraphQL is a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries with your existing data. GraphQL provides a complete and understandable description of the data in your API, gives clients the power to ask for exactly what they need and nothing more, makes it easier to evolve APIs over time, and enables powerful developer tools.
